Day one

Lockdown lightbulbs

‘’We learned to stuff our feelings’’,

The Big Red Book said.

I think about that daily –

Me? Surely, I over-express.

‘’We’re addicted to excitement’’,

Because of all of our childhood chess.

Oh! Now I get it

That’s why I seek out stress

‘’We are terrified of abandonment’’

Well, yes, that brought me here.

I see now the fears and needs,

Beneath the self-sufficient veneer.

I used to work with clients,

And read them like a book.

Thought I was a genius,

Didn’t clock I was still on the hook.

And now that lockdown has made me

Observe the child within.

I see that I’m still broken,

Still a product of where I have been.

Thanks COVID for the stillness,

No mask, just time to be.

For the humbling experience,

That deepens the journey to me.

I really love the title: Lockdown lightbulbs – it immediately makes something like lockdown (anticipated misery) sound not all bad, in fact quite useful….. I love how you’ve managed to make it rhyme …and still flow and make sense ….no mean feat! It’s so poignant and heartfelt. I love it! I really like the “without the masks ‘ which both captures the hear and now in our history of the pandemic as well as conjure up being bare. The notion of ‘childhood chess’ is wonderful and I think a notion you could explore and develop ….. whose game of chess? Are you a player or observer? Are you a pawn, or the Queen? What moves make you nervous? e.g. ….the whoosh of the bishop swooping diagonally across the board? what moves make you excited, hang on a cliff edge? etc ….. great great loaded mage .

Thanks … for the stillness. This captures so much about this strange experience we are all going through.
